The first was last Monday. Dr Ian Densham spoke on the love of God. This followed on from his previous lecture on the holiness of God. If God's holiness is his self-affirming character then love is his self-imparting one. This love is not selfishness but jealousy is an essential part of it. It is revealed chiefly in the incarnation. Spontaneous, uncreated and powerful, God's love is demonstrated in Christ. A transitive attribute, it is involved in God's relations to the creation, and is exercised in consequence of the existence of the universe and its dependence on him. Several hymns were quoted as were Louis Berkhof and Jim Packer.
Berkhof: that perfection of God by which he is eternally moved to self-communication
Packer: a spontaneous determination of God's whole being in an attitude of benevolence and benefaction, an attitude freely chosen and firmly fixed ... the love of God is free, spontaneous, unevoked, uncaused.
